Hey all, I am a fourth year college student majoring in psychology. A couple of papers I had to write dealt with things that I believe would be relevant to the PE community.
Most of us as MOS have near average, average, above average or huge penises. The average man, as we all know, is around 5.5 inches in length. Most of the people buying into PE believe that they need to make their penises larger when, in fact, they do not need to do so whatsoever.
Peers and the media may influence some of the reasons why men may be less than confident in their penis size. Although we shouldn't, it is normal for us men to want to have a larger penis.
Now here is where I come to my main point. When one is preoccupied with the belief that they need to make their normal penis larger then it may fall in the category of body dysmorphic disorder.
Body dysmorphic disorder is when someone imagines that they have something wrong with their bodies (maybe there actually is something wrong but these people will blow it way out of proportion) and obsess over it. In fact, most people suffering from this are average or above average (penis size, looks, ect. ect.). I am not referring to regular obsessing either. People with BDD will constantly think about their problem body part and how they can change it or what it would be like to have a different body make. One with BDD of the penis may stare at himself in the mirror for long periods of time usually resulting in depression. People with BDD tend to have depressive episodes. Their precieved problem body image makes it hard or impossible to interact with other people. For example, someone with BDD pertaining to their penis may always avoid sexual encounters with women.
Symptoms of depression:
*Sadness or hopelessness.
*Loss of interest in or pleasure from most daily activities.
*Losing or gaining weight because of changes in appetite.
*Sleeping too much or not enough.
*Feeling restless and unable to sit still, or feeling that moving takes a great effort.
*Feeling tired all the time.
*Feeling unworthy or guilty without an obvious reason.
* Having problems concentrating, remembering, or making decisions.
* Thinking often about death or suicide
Depressive episode symptoms which is different from just mere depression since it must last for at least two weeks (taken from outside source that I looked over and deemed exceptional):
* Depressed mood most of the day, nearly every day, as indicated by either subjective report (e.g., feeling sad or empty) or observation made by others (e.g., appears tearful). (In children and adolescents, this may be characterized as an irritable mood.)
* Markedly diminished interest or pleasure in all, or almost all, activities most of the day, nearly every day
* Significant weight loss when not dieting or weight gain (e.g., a change of more than 5% of body weight in a month), or decrease or increase in appetite nearly every day.
* Insomnia (inability to sleep) or hypersomnia (sleeping too much) nearly every day
* Psychomotor agitation or retardation nearly every day
* Fatigue or loss of energy nearly every day
* Feelings of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate guilt nearly every day
* Diminished ability to think or concentrate, or indecisiveness, nearly every day
* Recurrent thoughts of death (not just fear of dying), recurrent suicidal ideation without a specific plan, or a suicide attempt or a specific plan for committing suicide
A man with BDD of the penis or some other hidden body part usually will have lower self esteem in general which also makes things worse.
BDD is hard to diagnose since it is similar to other mood disorders. Although it is under diagnosed, in most cases, don't assume you have it just because you obsess about your penis at some times. If it bothers you too much you may want to go seek a therapist so that you can function better. Especially if you experience suicidal thoughts due to your BDD obsession (a lot of people suffering from this have thoughts of suicide).
I decided to post this since I think that it is possible people here may have BDD. Personally I believe I have mild diagnosable BDD. I find that when I PE my obsessive thoughts, preoccupations and depressive episodes go away. Since PE is beneficial to my penis I believe this is a good substitute to therapy.
